Classic Country Glamour. Honky-tonk spitfires. Mountain music melancholy delivered with a wink and a chuckle. This appropriately describes the Barnraisers aesthetic, sensibility, and sound. Drawing influences from early bluegrass, honky-tonk, and country music, this North Carolina bred trio would fit in nicely at your granny’s dinner table, or takin’ a big swig of your daddy’s homemade wine at the nearby drag strip.

Gathering around one mike, Tiff Reece leads the band with her sultry vocals and three-finger style banjo. She’s backed by Adam Forsythe’s flatpicking guitar, and Benjamin Smith pluckin' the mule. Barnraisers deliver a sound that is not only quality, but salt of the earth, making it easy to connect with critics and common folk alike. The usual drawbacks of having only three musicians are precisely what make the Barnraisers so great. Hiding behind each other is not an option for this band. Every member is singing, playing rhythm, and taking a lead break in practically every song, making it an unusual display of energy, enthusiasm, and sassiness.

It’s rare that you could find music that would be suitable for a romantic night with a loved one or the soundtrack to Bonnie and Clyde. Barnraisers are just that. No such thing as sophisticated, sassy, country folks, you say? Well, then you haven’t met the Barnraisers.

"The modern bluegrass duo / sometimes trio could charm the overalls right offa you with their musical ability and downright cuteness." CURRENTS Magazine

there's a new youtube video shot by Rocco at WE FEST on our media page -
AND... we're this month's issue of Southeast Performer Mag - Live review
(05/28/2008)
Well, WE Fest was a time, y'all! I mean, how much fun can you stand under one roof?!?!? Not only did we get to meet the lovely editor of Southeast Performer magazine, Mrs. Leila Regan Porter, but we got to share a stage with fine folks like Brett Harris, Doly Toro, and (my new favorite band) LA Tool or Die! Y'all they were so super cool, they had songs about moustaches that incorporated unicorn puppets, a gigantoid keyboard setup very reminiscent of "Europe" (the band, not the country), and their female vocalist/accordian player was rockin a black eye from a dodgeball accident! How cool can you get?

DJ Sergio, once again, made the second floor the place to be with his unbelievable mastery of the turntables. Wanda Jackson, people!!!! I was especially taken with all the rock-n-roll dancin going on. Our hats of to you, Sergio!!!

Thanks you everyone, for stickin around so late just to see lil ole us! We love you like nobody's business!
(05/16/2008)
New on the barnraiser site - a new original tune Shirley Bell added and lyrics to a couple of songs on the Press page -
(05/16/2008)
Mistakenly on our CD and in some recent interviews - The song "Sally's Let Your Bangs Hang Down" actually belongs to WRITERS: F. MADDOX, R. MADDOX (Rose Maddox) not Bill Carlisle.

The Holy City’s Got Some Devils

Call me crazy, but there must be some sort of voodoo hex that is keeping Barnraisers and Charleston apart. Lord knows we love that city, but our jaunts there have brought us nothin, but heartache. Let’s take a look at our most recent venture to the Holy City.

It seemed like just the right ingredients for a nice pot of Barnraisers stew. We got a great opportunity to play at the Map Room, a fine local venue with great ambiance and a really nice booking manager named Ryan. He was kind enough to give us an opportunity to play something called their Weststock Americana/folk festival. We got a decent spot in the lineup. Right after a sweet and talented musician named Laura Jane Vincent and right before sweet siren fronted bands Lasso and Kentucky Shoes. There was no reason on earth why we shouldn’t have had the night of our lives. And then, the all too familiar Charleston curses began to materialize.

It all started the week of the show. There was a fever. A fever so intense that it would have made Job himself question his faith. A fever, followed by lots of mucus, aches, and loss of voice. So, I pumped myself full of vitamins and Robitussin and kept on trucking. Then the fever struck Adam. This time with the vengeance of Hurricane Hazel. Now, Adam ain’t normally one to complain. So, if he starts to feeling squirrely, you can rest assured, he ain’t gonna say nothing unless it’s bad. And it was bad, boys and girls. The both of us didn’t leave the bed for 5 solid days. Even the dog began to look at us with an expression of both pity and disdain.

The Friday we were to leave for Charleston, I gathered up enough energy to get up and fix some coffee. It was then that I heard the bang. The bang that would leave me cursing and swearing at the top of my lungs. Cursing the piece of trash who had just committed a little hit and run on my poor car. A hit and run that would result in $2,000 worth of damage! But that wasn’t going to stop us! We had a regional gig! And how on earth could we let Charleston down? Matt volunteered to drive us to Chucktown and we were off, Adam propped up in the backseat with a few pillows.

Don’t ask me why we didn’t cancel. Adam was mighty sick, but I suppose we were worried it would look bad, us not showin’ up to our first Charleston gig, so we trudged onward. And whatdya think happened once we got to downtown Charleston? Well, Adam’s equilibrium was so outta sorts from the fever that he fell and busted his hip. It swelled up like like a daggone grapefruit and turned black and blue. He couldn’t sit too long and couldn’t stand too long. But I reckon we figured if we pumped full of painkillers and a beer or two, we could prop him up and nobody would notice.

It was about 4 songs into the set when I realized we were going down like a wounded buzzard. I don’t know what caused it all to spin out of control, but it did. And by the time “Long Hot Summer” came around, there was no saving it. The looks on the crowds faces was kind of a mixture of pity and embarrassment. Kinda like the dog’s face earlier in the week. Anyway, once it was all over, we were too ashamed to speak much to anybody and we got the hell outta there.

Now, that I don’t have to look anyone in the eye, I’d like to thank a few people for trying to make it more bearable. Thanks to Jamie from Kentucky Shoes, for talking and bein nice and making us feel like we fit in with the crowd. Thanks to Ryan for giving us the chance to play in the first place. Thanks to the V Tones for just bein plain fun. Thanks to Laura Jane Vincent for the compliments. Thanks to the cute blonde boy backstage for saying he like Cluck Ole Hen, and thanks to the folks who e-mailed us and said they enjoyed the show.

Well, Charleston. I don’t know what to say. But I think that Holy City’s got some Devils with our name on ‘em

There's no way we could find the words to tell you how much we appreciate your support and presence at our sweetheart show/cd release party. Even through my flu induced fog, your kind words made it the best night ever.

So, Thank you Wilmington for giving us the confidence to leave the perfect little nest of our port city and venture on down to the low country to try our hand at entertainin' some folks that don't know our names.

If you and your fine people are lookin for a road trip and something to do, Barnraisers will be playing March 1st at Charleston's very own Map Room with some sweet singin sirens from Kentucky Shoes, Lasso, Laura Jane Vincent, Daddy's Girls, and The V-Tones. It's a regular little festival for only five dollars. Filled with pretty ladies, pretty singin, and drinks with friends. It'd be great to see some beautiful port city faces in the crowd.

Don't forget! CD's are now availabe at Gravity Records and CD Alley! Get you some!

With sincere love and thanks, miss tiff

Well, to those who are interested,we've killed the rat and we can get down to the business of writin some songs and finishin our cd.

We finished our last session as of last night about 9:30 with the help of Helen, Dawn, and Toni, our favorite lady Barnraisers. A big ol thank you to them.

Our next show will be the Holiday Hoedown on December 21st with our good friends, No $ Shoes, L Shape Lot, Woodwork Roadshow, and the Superkiiids! We're gonna have the first little cut of our cd available for purchase if you're in a mess and hain't bought your lady friend nothing special for a stocking stuffer. Remember folks, this first one's gonna be a rough mix, so keep that in mind when you're finding all the mistakes and bloopers throughout it. Who knows, that one might even be a collector's item one day when we've gotten so good that we can't even make mistakes anymore!

Meanwhile, I'll keep on workin on my chops and see if I can't get halfway decent on that beast of a banjo.

Love you all and can't wait to throwdown with you for baby Jesus' birthday!

sincerely, miss tiff

Wow, man! What a weekend! Barnraisers got to headline one! Woohoo! Thanks everybody for staying out so late just to see little ol us.

Thanks to Matt Jewell and Matt Shepard for going down to the basement amongst all the thumping bass and draggin some folks upstairs to see music with real instruments. Thanks to Eric and Paul for not thinking I'm a Diva and thanks to the hilarious and talented Mike Slaton for just being his jolly old self and making me laugh til I near bout wet my britches.

I also want to mention our big Holiday Hoedown on the 21st with No Dollar Shoes, Woodwork Roadshow, The SuperKiiids, and L Shape Lot. We're glad to be sharing a stage with talent like this. Finally, a very special thanks to the gentleman who gave me advice about his homemade wharf rat trap after the show. I thank you kindly. See y'all at the holiday hoedown!!!

A real big thanks to all of our friends who took the time to come out and listen to our songs. Thanks for clapping and giving us more than the sound of crickets after each song.

Just like to thank the fine folks at Cameron art Museum (especially Daphne) for having us and giving us such a nice space to play in. The crowd was wonderful and we'd like to thank all those who came out. We'd especially like to thank our Jester's Java family for livening things up a little bit. Glad there are folks out there who dig the not so subtle melancholy subject matter of bluegrass and honkytonk music!
(10/11/07)
Special thanks to Brian and Kelly and all their kin for letting us play music on their big day. We felt warmly welcomed and it made playing all the better. You seem like you've got a good thing there and we're happy we were part of your wedding.

Sad to say that we had to cancel our show with Cary Ann Hearst. Bella Festa has closed it's doors and canceled all shows. We're going to try to get her (CAH) back to wilmington again soon.
(9/12/07)
I'd like to say a super great big thanks to the folks who came out real early to see us play the harvest festival. It was a little difficult to play to a sober crowd in the sunshine, but y'all were sweet none-the-less and made it easier for us. So, we appreciate the folks who are sticking with us through our period of self discovery and metamorphosis. And to the new faces in the crowd, we hope you liked it and will return for future shows. Some of these shows may even be at night and you might have the advantage of an hour or two worth of drinks in you before we go on, which always makes the show seem a lot better than it is in reality. ;)

Thank you to Langhorne Slim's peeps, old ceremony, Jason Isbell's fellers, and the avett's for sharing a stage and that fancy schmancy vip tent with us. We know we're just the local music talent for now and that ain't saying much when you're in the company of these guys, but they shared their fancy beers with us and Jason Isbell even shared his Jack Daniels.

A special thank you to Brent and the Soapbox fellers for making my birthday one of the best ever. Thanks to y'all, I didn't have to buy a drink all night and I got to pretend I fit in with the big boys. Love you all.

We would just like to thank all of the residents on Ocracoke and everyone affiliated with the Ocrafolk Festival. That little island really knows how to treat folks. We are super excited to be playing with the Earl Brothers on May 31st! No kidding y’all, this is one of our favorite bands of all time. Had it not been for them, who knows, we might not have even started our own band. Anyway, I know it’s a Thursday night, but I would hate for everyone to miss them. See what you can do and maybe we can persuade them to come to the port city more often.
